Free lawyers for those who need one
The Legal Defense Guild was founded in Talas in 2004 by the lawyer Gulnara Sadyk and five colleagues. We give free legal representation to journalists, students and others detained in the Zone, to victims of crimes who cannot pay a lawyer, and to associations in trouble with their registration. Our lawyers work in Talas, Nurzhan, Kyzyl-Adyr and Iyık Janyl.
Recent work
- In October 2023 we represented students detained after the protests in Talas and the reporter Erkin Bolot uulu, held for ten days for «obstructing police» and released without charge.
- During the 2023 election we documented complaints from polling stations in Talas.
- With Ak Jooluk we give free help to women taken for marriage against their will and their families.

Our money
The Guild is paid for by donations from Iradi lawyers and citizens and by foreign grants for legal aid. In 2021 the Ministry of Internal Security inspected our foreign grants. We called the inspection harassment; the Ministry called it routine. We have filed our Form IA-21 report every year.
